Do you want a website? If you had one, how could you use it to help your business? Froling Enterprises has been building websites for over a decade, which, in Internet terms, is a very long time.
Websites are a bit like colour televisions, it seems like they have been around forever!
When it comes to publishing information about your business, organisation, or almost anything, there is really not much around that is as cost effective and potentially more effective.
However the complexity, design, usefulness, profitability, cost and effectiveness of websites is enormous. If you are thinking about building a website, give us a call or drop us a line, we are happy to help.
How is a website built?
Website can be built in a variety of ways, from a plain text editor to a complex program like Dreamweaver generally these are what is called static websites. This means that the content of a page is generally in the same file as the code that displays it. A dynamic website will load content, whether it is held in a database or on other files and load them into a template of code. This can also be done with a simple text editor or with a tool like Dreamweaver.
The reality is that it is much better to use some sort of platform or framework to manage your content. Hence the term Content Management System (CMS)
A CMS might do a few things, it will provide.
- a means to edit the text for each of your web page
- a means to upload images for your web page (images are seperate files that are stuck in a page)
- a way of adding, editing and deleting pages
- a template or templates to display pages within a consistent page ‘look’
- manage documents of other types to be available for download (like pdf or MS word documents)
Now, there are literally hundreds of ‘frameworks’ or ‘platforms’ out there. Which one is the best? Well that’s the million dollar question, none and most – it depends on what you want from it and even then it may boil down to personal preference.
We generally use either of two platforms to develop our sites Business Catalyst, a proprietory product by Adobe and WordPress an open-source project used by literally millions around the world. Both of these platforms are extremely powerful and there are pros and cons for each, as there are for the hundreds of others available. That said we are happy to dive into others if you have a preference.
